First we had rogue programs telling you that your computer had '1203 problems' and to 'click here to fix it'. All that happened was that you paid a lot of money to fix issues that weren't there.
Then came the 'undeliverable items' email that downloaded nasty stuff onto your computer and again involved money to remove it.
The latest scam is by phone - you are called at random and told that Microsoft has detected a problem with your computer and would you like the company calling to fix it - once you have got your credit card out.
Firstly Microsoft would not know that there was something wrong with that specific computer even if there was something wrong. And how would they get your phone number anyway?
Best thing to do? Just put the phone down.
Email here, there and everywhere
We rely on email all the time, but what if we are out and about a lot?
Most ISPs (broadband providers) will give you email, but there is a lot of concern about spam where an email address may be 'spoofed' by someone else. So more and more ISPs lock an email address to a specific broadband line to try and combat spam. A great idea and invisible to most people.
But what if you plug your computer into another connection – say a wifi hotspot or a mobile broadband stick? This has a different address to your line at home and you can't send emails!
Panic ensues, but we can solve the problem with four options:
Use the webmail that most ISPs provide. This will sort out most people, but the limitation is that you can only use the email address(es) that your ISP gave you. If you are a business or use a different email address, then your emails will be sent from Joe.Smith@isp.com, for example, rather than sales@mybusiness.co.uk. So not great for the image.
Use a third party email provider. These usually give you access from anywhere in the world and lets you use your email client as normal.
Try a mobile phone with email. Most modern phones will let you link to your email account and you can send emails to and from the phone. There are practical limitations – no attachments, small keyboards and so on.
Run your own email server. Maybe for the brave, but it does work!
